METHODIST CHURCH
As the calendar turns toward spring, the church enters a quieter, more reflective season: Lent. It begins with Ash Wednesday, a meaningful day that invites us to pause, remember who we are, and prepare our hearts for Easter.
Whether you have observed Lent for years or are curious about it for the first time, this season offers a powerful opportunity to slow down, refocus, and draw closer to God.
What Is Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, occurring forty days before Easter (not counting Sundays). During Ash Wednesday services, worshipers often receive ashes in the shape of a cross on their foreheads.
The ashes serve as a visible reminder of two important truths: Our humanity and need for God and God’s mercy, grace, and invitation to repentance. The words often spoken during the imposition of ashes reflect this posture of humility and hope: Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. Repent and believe the gospel.
Ash Wednesday is not about guilt. It is about honesty. It reminds us that we are deeply loved and continually invited to turn our hearts back toward God.
What Is Lent and Why Do Christians Observe It?
Lent is a forty day season of spiritual preparation leading up to Easter. It mirrors Jesus’ forty days in the wilderness, where He fasted, prayed, and prepared for ministry.
Traditionally, Lent focuses on three spiritual practices:
Prayer – creating intentional space to listen for God
Fasting – letting go of distractions that pull our hearts away
Giving – practicing generosity and love toward others
For many, Lent becomes a season of spiritual reset. It is less about doing more and more about making room.
What Does Lent Look Like Today?
Lent looks different for everyone.
Some choose to give something up as a reminder to rely more fully on God. Others add a daily prayer practice, Scripture reading, or acts of service. The goal is not perfection, but intention.
Lent invites us to ask meaningful questions:
What has been distracting me from God?
Where do I need renewal or healing?
How can I prepare my heart to fully experience Easter?
Why Lent Matters in a Busy World
In a culture that constantly pushes us to move faster, Lent invites us to slow down.
It creates space for reflection, repentance, and renewal. It reminds us that Easter joy is deeper when we have walked through honest self examination and prayer.
Lent does not end in ashes. It leads us to resurrection.
