Jesus Our Wonderful Counselor

The Christmas season invites us to slow down and remember the promise spoken centuries before Jesus was born. In Isaiah 9:6, the prophet declared that the coming Messiah would be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

This week, we’re focusing on that first name, Wonderful Counselor, and what it means for us today.

The Miracle of Biblical Prophecy

Long before the manger in Bethlehem, Scripture pointed directly to Jesus. More than 350 prophecies about the Messiah were fulfilled in His life, death, and resurrection. These weren’t lucky guesses. They were specific promises about His birthplace, lineage, ministry, and even His suffering and resurrection.

Mathematically, the odds of one person fulfilling even a dozen of these prophecies is nearly impossible, yet Jesus fulfilled them all. Christmas reminds us: God keeps His promises.

What “Wonderful” Really Means in Isaiah 9:6

When Isaiah called the Messiah “Wonderful,” he wasn’t describing something simply pleasant. The Hebrew word means:

Miraculous

Extraordinary

Supernatural

Beyond human ability

It’s a word reserved for the works of God Himself.

Jesus Embodied the Miraculous

Throughout His ministry, Jesus consistently displayed supernatural authority:

Turning water into wine

Feeding thousands with a boy’s lunch

Walking on water

Casting out demons

Healing the sick

Raising the dead, including Lazarus after four days in the tomb

These weren’t performances. They were signs that Jesus carries divine power and operates far beyond any human counselor or advisor.

What Makes Him a “Counselor”?

In ancient Israel, kings depended on counselors for wisdom and strategy. But Isaiah wasn’t referring to another human consultant. The Hebrew idea of “Counselor” means the One who holds the very wisdom of God.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus demonstrated that divine counsel:

In Nazareth

People were stunned by His teaching and asked, “Where did this man get such wisdom?”

In the Wilderness

He resisted Satan’s temptations with perfect discernment.

In His Teaching

The Sermon on the Mount continues to shape lives 2,000 years later because it carries heaven’s authority.

In the Hardest Situations

The story of the woman caught in adultery shows Jesus at His counseling best. Religious leaders set a trap. Jesus responded with supernatural wisdom:

“Let the one without sin cast the first stone.”

He upheld justice. He extended mercy. And He transformed a life.

In Transforming the Unlikely

Tax collectors, some of the wealthiest and most corrupt men of their day, abandoned everything to follow Him. That kind of change only comes from divine counsel meeting the human heart.

Why This Matters for Us Today

Isaiah’s prophecy wasn’t just a poetic line. It was a promise:
Jesus would come close enough to guide His people.

And today, He still does.

You Have Access to Divine Wisdom

Human wisdom is helpful, but it’s limited. Jesus offers something deeper: supernatural insight, spiritual clarity, and guidance rooted in truth and love.

He Doesn’t Just Advise, He Transforms

Jesus doesn’t offer surface solutions. He changes hearts, renews minds, restores purpose, and leads us into life we can’t live on our own.

Putting the Wonderful Counselor Into Practice

As we move through the Christmas season, consider asking yourself:

Where am I relying on my own wisdom instead of seeking the Lord’s guidance?

What decisions or situations need the Wonderful Counselor’s clarity?

How might my life look different if I truly believed I had access to the mind of God through Jesus?

What areas of my heart need His miraculous, supernatural touch?

Open your Bible. Sit with Him in prayer. Slow down and invite His counsel. The Wonderful Counselor delights in guiding His people.

You Don’t Walk Alone

The same Jesus who calmed storms, offered perfect wisdom, and transformed lives 2,000 years ago is still doing it today. He is near. He is wise. He is powerful. He is for you.

This Christmas, remember:
You have a Wonderful Counselor who knows you, loves you, and guides you every step of the way.
