In a world that often promotes self-reliance and independence, we need to be reminded of a fundamental truth: God is not only our Creator but also our active Sustainer. This reality should transform how we view ourselves, our purpose, and our relationship with the Almighty.
What Does Creation Teach Us About God?
Job understood something profound about creation that his friends seemed to miss. When they tried to lecture him about God's sovereignty, Job responded with wisdom found in Job 12:7-10: "'But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of every human being.'" - Job 12:7-10 New International Version (NIV)
Job's point was clear: even creation itself testifies to God's power and presence. This wasn't hidden knowledge reserved for the spiritually elite - it was evident to anyone willing to observe.
How Does Creation Function as a Signpost?
Creation serves as more than just a beautiful backdrop for our lives. According to Psalm 19:1, "'The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands'" - Psalm 19:1 New International Version (NIV). Creation functions as a signpost, pointing us toward something greater than itself.
When we see a magnificent sunset, the appropriate response isn't just to marvel at the sunset itself. If creation is functioning as God intended, we should look at that sunset and then turn our attention to the magnificent hands that created it. The beauty we observe in nature should direct our worship toward the Creator, not stop at the creation.
What Does It Mean to Be Made in God's Image?
We are part of God's creation, but we hold a unique position. Being made in God's image means we are created to functionally represent God and His character before all creation. We are the ultimate signpost among created things.
God didn't make mountains, fish, or birds in His image - He made us. What an incredible gift it is to be useful to the Creator of the universe, to be found worthy of representing Him to the world around us.
This understanding fundamentally changes how we approach life. When we know our purpose - to serve and represent God - we can live with direction and meaning, much like an employee who clearly understands their job description versus one who sits at a desk with no instructions.
Why Does Understanding God as Creator Matter?
Recognizing God as Creator establishes the proper order of things. God is ultimate, self-existent, with no beginning or end. We are not ultimate - we have a beginning and exist for a purpose: to point toward the One who is truly ultimate.
This reality should humble us. Too often, we try to take God's place on the totem pole, wanting to be our own authority and make our own rules. But when we understand our place as created beings, we approach God asking, "How can I serve You?" rather than demanding, "How can You serve me?"
What Does It Mean That God Is Our Sustainer?
God didn't just create the world and step back. Job 12:10 reminds us that in God's hand "is the life of every living thing and the breath of every human being." This is present tense - God is actively sustaining us right now.
Every morning you wake up, it's because God chose to give you breath. You didn't earn it or control it - it was a gift from the Creator. Even something as basic as breathing is dependent on God's active sustaining power.
Colossians 1:17 tells us that Christ "holds all things together." This isn't past tense - He is actively holding everything together at this very moment. The building you're in, your body, the entire universe - all held together by Christ's power.
How Should This Change Our Perspective?
Understanding God as our Sustainer should produce two responses:
Humility : We are not independent or self-sufficient. We are weak and dependent on God for our very existence. This counters our culture's message of complete self-reliance.
Worship : Every breath is a reason to worship. Every morning we wake up is evidence of God's faithfulness, even when we've been faithless. Despite our sins, God continues to sustain us - that's worthy of our praise.
What Makes the Gospel So Amazing?
Here's what makes the Gospel incredible: this powerful God who sits on His throne, who puts breath in the lungs of every living being, willingly stepped down from His throne. He subjected Himself to humiliation, torture, and crucifixion for you.
As Mark 10:45 says, "'For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many'" - Mark 10:45 New International Version (NIV).
The most astounding truth is that when Christ was crucified, He was the one holding together the very wood of the cross. He had the power to call down legions of angels, but instead He said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" (Luke 23:34 NIV).
How Can We Know This God Better?
How can we adequately worship and have a relationship with someone we know nothing about? God has made it easier by giving us His Word. The Bible contains the very words of our Creator and Sustainer.
Through Scripture, we learn that God is abundant in compassion and love, that He provides for orphans, that He stepped into human flesh and died for our sins. We discover that He is the way to abundant life both here and in eternity.
Life Application
This week, commit to opening your Bible daily. Just as we opened God's Word together in worship, make it a practice to meet with your Creator and Sustainer through His written revelation. You cannot worship a God you don't know, and He has revealed Himself on every page of Scripture.
Ask yourself these questions:
- When I see beauty in creation, do I stop at admiring the creation, or do I worship the Creator?
- Am I approaching God asking how He can serve me, or how I can serve Him?
- How does knowing that God actively sustains my every breath change how I start each day?
- What would change in my life if I truly lived as though my purpose is to represent God to others?
Remember, the God who spoke light into existence thinks you are worthy of His death on a cross. That truth should transform how you live, breathe, and serve Him each day.
